When evaluating which type of packaging tape will best meet your company's needs, it's important to see how plastic and paper tape compare in terms of key features and benefits.
Because its full name is "paper," those unfamiliar with kraft tape might guess that it tears easily and isn't particularly durable. However, paper packaging tape forms a permanent bond with the carton material, effectively making it as strong as cardboard or other materials. Additionally, reinforced packaging tape has fiberglass filaments that make it stronger. This allows duct tape to seal heavy boxes with a single piece of tape and withstand long and often rough shipping.
While useful for a variety of purposes, plastic carton sealing tape is not as strong as kraft paper tape. Often, packers will have to use multiples of plastic tape to achieve the same effect as a single piece of paper wrapping tape.
Durability/Reliability
Again, once applied, the duct tape basically "becomes one piece" with the carton. Therefore, it is as durable and reliable as the box itself. This includes maintaining a strong, tamper-proof seal in humid, hot, cold, dry, dusty and other adverse conditions. Kraft paper tape is also resistant to punctures and tears.
In carton sealing applications, plastic tapes are far less durable and reliable than kraft paper tapes. In fact, plastic carton sealing tape tends to fail quickly when punctured or torn, allowing the shipped package to open and expose or spill its contents in transit.

Because its adhesive creates a more fragile surface connection to the carton, plastic tape does little to prevent "carton press and grab" theft. The package contents can be easily obtained by thieves without obvious signs of carton damage.
The excellent seal of the kraft adhesive tape makes it difficult for thieves to get into the carton and commit a "crime of opportunity" unattended. They will have to work hard to cut the entire length of the seal with a knife or other sharp tool in order to lift the flap and remove the contents.
